Is professional window cleaning worth the cost?

It is common to think that having your windows cleaned professionally is a luxury and purely for cosmetic purposes. The truth is, getting your windows cleaned professionally can prolong their lifespan and keep them looking good as new, longer. In many instances, hiring professionals like the crew at MAC may be even cheaper than doing it yourself considering the valuable time, effort and materials necessary to complete the job. Your windows are something that should be cleaned consistently, at least once per year to prevent hard water and grime buildup. MAC Window Cleaners have tried-and-true methods to make your windows streak free and for a fair price, if you happen to need any of our other services we are happy to help!

Why should I have my windows cleaned?

Every home or business has varying levels of need when it comes to window cleaning. Our crew at MAC is prepared for any challenge they may come across to ensure your windows shine. Here are just a few benefits of having your windows cleaned:

  1. Curb Appeal – Whether you are preparing to sell your home, or you are trying to get new customers in your business, having clean windows helps your overall appearance not only from the outside but also from the inside. Grime can obscure the incoming light and become an unsightly distraction to your visitors or potential customers, while clean windows show proper attention to upkeep and will convey that cleanliness is a priority.
  2. Extend the Life of Your Windows – Professional cleanings can remove corrosive elements and potential mold from your windows, seals, and window frames which can reduce the likelihood of future damage, saving you money on costly repairs and replacements. Central Oregon is well known for its dusty environment, and without proper upkeep, hard water staining is a common enough occurrence that can be avoided through proper upkeep.
  3. Retain Window Efficiency – MAC window cleaners will inspect each window for any damaged window seals which can often lead to air leaks, fogging and condensation, resulting in higher energy bills.
  4. Safety – The risk of ladder climbing and walking on roofs while cleaning is the most obvious safety reason to have your windows professionally cleaned. The cleaners at MAC understand proper footwear, ladder placement, spotting techniques and of course OSHA regulations to stay safe on the job.

When should windows be washed?

As dusty as Central Oregon is, it’s a bit of a toss up when it comes to finding the best time to get your windows cleaned. Generally MAC recommends once in the spring and once in the fall. These times are selected to clean the prior season’s effects on the windows and to prepare them for the following season. It is also common to have the windows cleaned once per year in the summer, right after our annual pollen drop to get rid of that vibrant yellow dust.

That said, these are our suggestions and windows can really be cleaned almost any time of the year and no, rain will not make them dirty again! Dirt makes your windows dirty, not rain. In fact, rain helps keep your windows clean, as it lowers the levels of dirt, pollen, and pollution floating around in the air and thus keeping those elements from landing on your windows.

What does window cleaning include?

A full service window clean will include all of the windows, cleaned interior and exterior, and a brief brushing of the screens to remove any dirt. The MAC process is as follows:

  1. Remove window screens preventing access to the window.
  2. Apply soap and water solution to the window using a mop.
  3. Scrub the window (exterior only) with Super Fine #0000 grade steel wool (this steel wool is so fine that it will NOT scratch the window) to polish the window and remove any dirt or debris stuck on the glass.
  4. If necessary, safely scrape any debris still left with a professional handheld razor.
  5. Reapply the soap and water solution to then expertly squeegee the window clean of water to leave no streaking or residual dirt.
  6. Using a rag, clean the edges of the window to pick up any left over water and wipe out the screen slot.
  7. Inspect the window for any blemishes like failing seals, hard water staining or scratches and make a note of them, to relay to you.
  8. Brush out the removed screen to remove dust and place back into the screen slot in front of the window. The window is now complete and the cleaner can move on to the next set of panes.
  9. Repeat until all the windows shine!

Other features of a window clean can include cleaning mirrors, shower glass, solar panels, window tracks and skylights for additional costs. Once the cleaning has been completed, the MAC contractors will help you settle payment. Cash, check and card are all acceptable payment options, but be aware of the 3% processing fee in place for card payments.

How do I get a window cleaning bid and what is the process?

If you are interested in using MAC Home Services for your window cleaning, you can reach out to us by phone, email, social media, or the Contact Us tab on this website. You will then speak to a representative and schedule a time for a free window cleaning estimate. Once we have a contractor out to you, they will need to survey the house to make notes on the amount of window panes and what MAC might need to complete the cleaning. Our contractor should be able to answer any questions you may have. The information we gather gets sent back to our scheduling representative and they will reach out to inform you of the estimate, and can then schedule the clean if you would like to move forward.

How do I prepare for my window cleaning?

Some of the things you can do to prepare for a window cleaning include:

  1. Clean your blinds of any dust that may come into contact with your clean windows. (MAC Home Services offers house cleaning and can send one of our trusted professional house keepers out to clean your blinds).
  2. Move any personal belongings, fragile items or furniture (if able)  away from the windows and remove any decoration that may be hanging on the windows.
  3. Close any open windows and remove AC units if you wish to have the associated window fully cleaned.
  4. Make sure fence gates are unlocked to allow passage to windows outside.

What does it cost?

MAC charges $7 per pane for the interior and exterior of the pane to be cleaned, and $5 per pane for just the exterior to be cleaned. Tracks can be added for an extra $1 – $2 per track depending on how dirty they may be. Skylights are double the price of a normal pane, and interior mirrors or shower glass are also $5 per pane. There is a $100 minimum bid for window cleaning.

(Please note that while these are the prices MAC uses, the only way to get an official bid amount is for a MAC representative to come out and survey the job. Other fees like difficulty, multi-story homes, and location may be a factor in your price.)

Should I tip my window cleaner?

Although tipping a window cleaner is a personal decision, it is a very nice gesture to show appreciation for a job well done. A good tip can vary between 10% and 20%, and help a contractor cover their lunch!
